We are the Q'ero

Our Q’ero Nation is comprised of five adjacent indigenous communities: Kiku, Hapu, Markachea, Q’eros Totorani and Hatun Q’eros, in the Paucartambo district within the department of Cusco, located 200 kilometers Northeast of the ancient Inka capital city of Cusco, Peru. Hatun Q'eros lies in the most remote area, at the heart of the Q'ero Nation. Our villages in the clouds span elevations from 7000 to 15,000 feet above the sea and historic data, including the unique Inka patterns in our weavings, designate us as the last inheritors of the Inka Culture and traditions

Q'ero History of 1000 years

In 1949 anthropologist Oscar Nuñez del Prado recognized us at our spiritual mecca of Q'ollorit'i by our speech, bearing, and Inka patterned weavings. In 1955 he led the first academic expedition to our villages, where he recorded our grandparents' oral history of the founding of our villages by Inkari & Qoyari, BEFORE the founding of Cusco city. During Inka times we were the keepers of the vicuña and weavers of the Inka's sacred garments. Pre-Inka food storehouses and the ruins of our ancestors homes showed they moved with the snowline.

Our Hatun Q'eros houses, built with Inka anti-seismic architecture and utilitarian niches, suggests by western time reckoning that we have inhabited our villages for close to
a thousand years.

In 2007 we were recognized as a Cultural Patrimony and “The Last Inka Ayllu” of Peru by the Peruvian National Institute of Culture.

Villages of Hatun Q'eros

Our six villages are called Chua Chua, Challmachimpana, Qochamoqo, Q’ollpa K’uchu, Charqapata and Hatun Rumiyoc, and these Quechua names refer to the natural features found in each distinct location. Chua Chua is named for the many ravines and gorges located here. Challamachimpana tells us that here, our thatch-roofed village houses lie alongside the river.

Qochamoqo means mountain lake and is so named for the numerous lagoons in this annex, whereas Q’ollpa Kuchu refers to the red colored earth found here in abundance that we use in our healing ceremonies.

Charqapata is named for its numerous lagoons that contain a lot of marine algaes known as “charqas,” and Hatun Rumiyoq means ‘place of the large rock’ because indeed, an immense boulder marks this place.
